RESPONSES FOR COMMON INQUIRIES

What is the minimum grade point average?

The students who are successful in getting accepted generally have at least a B+ to A- average in their 3rd and 4th year courses. They all have a Bachelors degree with a strong genetics background.

What if I don’t meet the academic requirements?

Failed course: If the failed course is in basic genetics or biology, it is suggested that the course be repeated.

Applicants who have a four-year degree or its academic equivalent which does not meet the minimum academic requirements, and have had significant formal training and relevant professional experience may be granted admission on the recommendation of the Genetic Counselling Program and on approval of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

What are some examples of counselling experience?

Planned Parenthood, a telephone crisis line, rape relief shelter, hospice centre, or peer counselling are all acceptable examples of counselling experience.

Do I need to upgrade if I completed my degree more than 5 years ago?

Yes, especially in Genetics.

What are the employment prospects?

All of the UBC graduates are currently working. Most find jobs before or shortly after graduation.

I am a foreign medical doctor, can I apply to the program?

How do I obtain genetic clinic experience?

To get a really good idea of what a genetic counsellor does, applicants often get experience in a genetics clinic doing some volunteer work, a directed study project or a work study position. Interested applicants may want to contact the local genetics centre and see if any of these options are available. It is understood that this may not be an option for all individuals.

Do I need to take the GRE exam?

No.

Can I complete the program on a part-time basis?

Given the course load and clinical requirements, the program currently is a full-time program.
